Here are 5 things that help me perform the most effective searches when I am looking for specific content on the interweb, I trust you will find these tips helpful or affirming what you are already doing.
Tip #1: Search specific word or phrase using “quotes”
When looking for a specific phrase I type “the whole phrase with quotes” as opposed to the whole phrase without quotes. The “quotes” tell the search engin to look for those exact words.
Tip #2: Do not search these words
Use the minus (-) to make sure words do not show up. This is great when searching Google but I find it most helpful when on eBay. I was looking for an “iPhone 4s” several months ago but while the quotes make sure “iPhone 4s” is in the title it does not exclude any other words. So not only does the iPhone 4s pop up but so do iPhone 4s chargers, iPhone 4s pink cases, iPhone 4s cradles, etc. So after “iPhone 4s” I add -chargers, pink, -cases, -cradles. This is a great tool!
Tip #3: Phone Listings and Area Codes
This is good for reverse looking up. Weird caller id #? Google it. Start with your number and see if Google knows it is yours. If that does not work try starting your # like this phonebook:815-555-1234. Ever get a weird call that you do not know where the call is from? Just type the area code in Google or type the area code + the words area code (815 area code).
Tip #4: Quick Weather
If you type a city name followed by the word weather you get a quick look at a forecast in most search engins.
Tip #5: Fill in the Blanks
If you are searching a phrase and forget a word us the *.
For example, for God so * the *
