TODAY (October 4) on woot.com you can get the L5 Universal Remote dongle for under $20 (normally $45 on Amazon). This is not something I use everyday but it is a handy tool to have in your bag. Have you ever been to a McDonals, doctor’s office waiting room, or a lounge and wish you could change the channel? Now you can! I bought mine over a year ago and love it. You can teach the FREE app your remote from your living room or search through the models they have in their sync cloud. If you have not converted to the iPhone 5 or the new touch with new 8 pin lightning dock then I recommend you pick one of these up. It works on everything I own; stereo, TV, DVD, blu-ray, Apple TV, Roku. Great price, great tool.
The premiere of NBC’s Revolution does not happen for a few days but you can watch it now…totally FREE online at NBC.com, Hulu, and iTunes (FREE Download). I just watched the pilot today and thought it was great. The concept is living in a world where all electronic technology has become disabled, never to work again. This show kind of seems a little like “The Walking Dead” without Zombies or “Lost” without the purgatory.
Subtle Google references, mocking flip phones, and the focus on technology makes this blog worthy…not to mention the free download and advanced viewing from NBC! There are scenes with some strong violence and mild language so be aware. The videography and special effects are stellar and the story is well written. Directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man) with executive producer J.J. Abrams (producer of…just about everything awesome on tv and big screen) this could be the big hit of 2012.
iPhone 5 officially announced with 4-inch display, A6 CPU and LTE for $199 on September 21st. I was not there so check out my favorite place that does Apple coverage, Engadget.
Today was day one of about 70. Now through Thanksgiving I will be exercising and watching my calories hoping to drop another 30-40 pounds. Two years ago I went in on a weight loss challenge from September 1 to November 24 with a few friends and lost 40 pounds. SIDE NOTE: I probably should have checked with my doctor but did not. This blog post is in no way a recommendation of any diet. I am not a doctor, I have not played on on TV, nor have I consulted a doctor on this…I just want to share what I did then, what I will be doing now, and how technology plays into it.
I look super happy in this pic, don’t I? That was taken this morning right before I left for the gym. I am sporting all the tech that will help me buckle down over these 72 days. Before I talk tech let me share what I am eating and doing.
I am sure there are several things to tweek or complain about from what I just wrote (remember this is not a recommendation, it is just what I did) but the bottom line is I did all that for 90 days (I only exercised 2x a week, Monday and Wednesday) and lost 40 pounds. After Thanksgiving 2010 I went back to eating whatever I wanted (that was 2 years ago) and I only gained about 5 pounds back.
In this pic you see a scale, Fitbit, chest strap, armband, and headphones. 2 more items you don’t see that I plan on using are my iPhone and iPad.
What tech are you using to help you with your diet and or weight loss? Is there an app that is helping you? Are you using any of the Withings products? Maybe a body bug? Share with us in the comments!
My one part blog post on getting ride of cable and dish has turned in to a trilogy (Here, here, and the post you are reading). This is a quick update on Amazon Prime. I read yesterday that Amazons signed a streaming deal with Epix ( an entertainment channel that partners with several major movie studios). This will double the number of movies on Amazon Prime. If you are a streaming video consumer you might want to keep your eye on their selections to see if becoming a subscriber is worth your money. I like how David Pogue from the New York Time sums up Amazon Prime…
Prime membership started out as an attractive option for people who shop a lot on Amazon: for $79 a year, you get free two-day shipping on almost any purchase (or $4 overnight). Then Amazon added those streaming movies to the Prime perks, and then added one free Kindle e-book rental a month.
Random, right? It’s like a Fruit of the Month Club membership that comes with free oil changes, ski socks and tax advice.
Well, it is random but I like the perks…I may just become a Prime member this week with this new deal they struck with EPIX.
So…

In a quick follow up to Monday’s Cutting the Cord post I want to key you in on the apps that I use to assist me with my streaming set-top boxes.
SET-TOP:
For the Apple TV I use their Remote app. This app has always been solid. Perfect for controlling iTunes and the Apple TV. This is a must-have app for anyone who uses iTunes and own an iOS device. There are several pay-for remote apps for Roku but I am using their home grown app simply called Roku. I like how you can call up specific “channels” (Roku’s version of apps) with shortcuts built right in the app. Both of these apps are super easy too setup and connect, just make sure you are on the same wifi network. Both of these apps also have a keyboard feature making them extremely useful. It is not fun when you are searching for a show and have to type one letter at a time using arrows to get to the next letter.
Both of these apps are FREE and work on iPad and iPhone. There is an Android app for Roku by Roku but Apple has not created an Apple TV app for Android. You could try this but I do not think it is the same.
TV:
I also use the L5 remote from time to time. I do not use it at home as much as I do when I am on the road. The TV station that is on in a hotel, McDonalds, or hospital lobby is usually set to something lame…I whip out my dongle, download the TV make (sometimes I have to try a few different variations), and BAM…I can change the channel from CNN to ESPN at the local McDonalds.
MUSIC:
I use my Spotify app a lot, mostly on my iPhone. But when I listen to Spotify from my computer I like using Remoteless. Remoteless is a Spotify remote for my iPhone or Android. The iPhone app is $3 and the Android version is $2. It took some time setting up at church because of the security and the large network but I found a way around it. However, when I am at home using it, it just works…
I am not a rumor junkie but I like hearing stuff about upcoming Apple products…I am now patiently waiting for September 12…the suspected reveal of the iPhone 5.
One site I like to check every once in a while is wheniskeynote.com. They have a countdown to known Apple Keynotes. If the picture below is legit, you can see the “5″ as the shadow of the 12. I am expecting a 7 inch iPad that day too…we will see.
